How do I edit a Word file in One Clear Reader?
To edit the Word file itself, use Edit this Word file (Pro) in One Clear Reader.
- Open the .docx and press ⌘E, or click Edit, or choose Edit this Word file in ⌘K.
- A bar appears: "Editing the Word file". Locked paragraphs are marked on the page.
- Click into any unlocked paragraph or table cell and change the words.
- To change a paragraph's style, use the style menu in the bar, or the keys below.
- Click Save 3 changes (the number counts changed paragraphs), or press ⌘S.
The status line tells you what's happening: "3 paragraphs changed. Everything else in the file stays as it is."
To stop without saving, click Cancel or press Esc.

If the file doesn't have one of these styles, it isn't offered. A paragraph using some other style shows as Other style.
What can't I change in a Word file in One Clear Reader?
One Clear Reader locks some parts of a Word file so nothing in the file breaks. A locked paragraph is labeled on the page, for example "Locked · a footnote" or "Picture · change it in Word".
Paragraphs are locked when they hold:
- a picture or an embedded object
- a field, like a page number or a link
- a footnote or an endnote
- a comment
- a content control
- an equation, a shape or a text box
- hidden text, symbols or other special Word content
There are also a few limits on every paragraph:
- No new paragraphs. Return is blocked. Add paragraphs in Word, or use Edit a copy.
- No bold or italic switching. Existing formatting stays, but you can't turn it on or off here.
- Paste is plain text. Formatting from what you copied is dropped.

What happens when I save a Word file in One Clear Reader?
One Clear Reader saves a Word file carefully, because Word files are fussy.
- It works on a copy. The original isn't touched yet.
- Only the paragraphs you changed are rewritten. Headers, footers, styles and everything else stay byte for byte.
- It checks the edited copy opens as a proper document.
- It saves a backup of the original.
- Only then does it swap the new file in.
If any step fails, you see "Not saved" and the Word file is left exactly as it was.
Where does One Clear Reader keep Word backups?
One Clear Reader keeps Word backups in a folder on your Mac:
~/Library/Application Support/One Clear Reader/Word backups
(~ means your home folder. Library is hidden in Finder by default.)
The easy way there: press ⌘K and choose Show Word backups in Finder (Pro). Each backup is named after the file and the time, like Report 2026-09-28 142233.docx. The newest 20 are kept for each file name. Older ones are removed.
To go back to an earlier version, copy the backup you want out of that folder in Finder, rename it to match the original, and put it where the original was.

On One Clear Reader's free plan, use Edit a copy as Markdown.
