What's the difference between One Clear Reader and Typora?

One Clear Reader and Typora both turn Markdown into something that looks like a finished document. They start from different jobs.

Typora is a writing app. There's no separate preview. You type Markdown and it turns into formatted text in place, as you go. It's one of the most loved Markdown editors, for good reason.

One Clear Reader is a reading app that also edits. It's built around the moment an AI tool gives you a file path or a file name, and you want to see that document properly, right now, without hunting through Finder. Then it helps with what comes next: telling the AI what to fix, seeing what it changed, or sending a Word version to someone who has never heard of Markdown.

If you spend your day writing in Markdown, Typora is likely the better fit. If you spend your day receiving Markdown from Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT, keep reading.

Where are One Clear Reader and Typora level?

One Clear Reader and Typora are level on the basics: diagrams, tables, math, version history and local files.

• Diagrams, tables and math. Both draw Mermaid diagrams, tables and math. Typora uses MathJax for math. One Clear Reader uses KaTeX, and leaves a price like $20 in normal text alone.
• Version history. Typora uses the Mac's own Browse All Versions. One Clear Reader keeps a copy before each save and each outside change. Free shows the newest 3, Pro up to 25.
• Your files stay yours. Both work on ordinary files on your own disk.

So pick on the job you do most.

When is Typora the better choice?

Typora beats One Clear Reader when you write long documents, use Windows or Linux, want to pay less once, or want to restyle everything with CSS.

You write long documents

Typora's live editing is its best feature. You never look at a split screen or toggle a preview. Headings grow as you type the #, tables appear as you draw them. For essays, documentation, course notes or a book draft, that flow is hard to beat.

If you write equations, as well as read them, Typora is the more natural place for that too, simply because you're already writing there all day.

You use Windows or Linux

A Typora license covers up to three devices across Mac, Windows and Linux. One Clear Reader is Mac only, and the current build runs on Apple silicon Macs only, so it won't run on an Intel Mac yet.

You want to pay once, and pay less

Typora costs $14.99 once. One Clear Reader Pro is $19.99 a year, or $59 once ($29 for the first 500 buyers at launch). If you want paid features and dislike subscriptions, Typora is the cheaper one-time buy.

You want to restyle everything with CSS

Typora's themes are CSS files, and there's an official gallery of community themes (Typora support). One Clear Reader has 22 ready-made themes (counting light and dark versions) and lets you change 14 colors with Adjust colours (Pro), but there's no option to load your own CSS.

When is One Clear Reader the better choice?

One Clear Reader beats Typora when your Markdown comes from AI, you review what it wrote, someone wants Word or PDF, your files aren't all Markdown, or long text wears you out.

Your Markdown comes from AI

Where your Markdown comes from is the core difference. When Claude says Saved to ~/Documents/project/plan.md, you have a path, not a file on your desktop.

In One Clear Reader you press ⌘L, paste that path and press Return. It strips quotes, backticks, a file:// at the front or a :142 on the end, and the document opens formatted. If you only remember part of the name, type plan in the same box. It uses Spotlight to search your home folder and iCloud Drive, names first, then files with those words inside.

Some files hide where search can't reach. Spotlight skips /tmp, and Claude Code keeps plans in ~/.claude/plans (~ means your home folder). The Latest from your AI list on the welcome screen shows documents changed in the last 24 hours, newest first, and it checks those folders too. Where AI tools save files explains the rest.

With Typora, as with most editors, you get to the file first, through Finder or File › Open. Its Quick Open searches by name inside the folder you have loaded (Typora docs).

You review what the AI wrote

Say Claude hands you a plan with three things wrong. Select the words, press ⌥⌘N, type your note. The note stays tied to those words. When you're done, Copy as prompt copies one message with the file path, each quote and each note, ready to paste back into Claude or Codex. Free gives you 3 notes a document. Pro has no limit.

When the AI rewrites the file, the page reloads and tells you how many sections are new or changed, with a button to jump to each one. A note whose text changed shows "This text has changed". With Pro, Changed since your last visit marks what's different since you last read the file, even days later. How to review a Claude Code plan walks through it.

We didn't find anything like this in Typora's docs. You'd copy lines into the chat by hand.

Someone wants a Word doc or a PDF

Save as Word (Pro) builds a real .docx, with Word headings, lists, tables, links and pictures. Diagrams go in as pictures. Save as client PDF (Pro) adds a cover with a title, "Prepared for", "Prepared by" and a date.

Your files aren't all Markdown

AI work produces more than .md. Research comes back as a PDF, a colleague sends a .docx, the AI exports a .csv or an .html page. One Clear Reader opens them all: PDFs in their original layout, EPUB books, web pages with their scripts switched off, and CSV files as one sortable table.

Word files open with their real headings. With Pro you can change the words in place and it stays a Word file, with a backup kept before each save. On Free, Edit a copy as Markdown makes a .md beside it and never touches the Word file. Typora only opens Word and EPUB by importing them through Pandoc.

Long AI text wears you out

One Clear Reader has ready-made reading profiles, all free. Neuro-friendly switches to Atkinson Hyperlegible with extra letter, word and line spacing, a narrower column and a cream page. Paragraph Focus dims everything except one paragraph, and you move with ↑ and ↓. Large Print does what it says.

No. If you only open a .md file now and then, you don't need to pay for Typora, One Clear Reader or anyone else.

A complaint you'll see about Typora is fair: $15 feels steep for something you open twice a month, and Typora has no free version after its trial. One Clear Reader's free version covers that person. It opens files, formats them, searches, edits Markdown and keeps 3 review notes a document, for as long as you like.

Pay only when you need what Pro adds: Word and PDF out, the visual editor, editing Word files in place, 10 tabs instead of 3, and unlimited notes. If you write every day, Typora's one-time $14.99 is good value, and we'd say so.

What do One Clear Reader and Typora feel like in use?

One Clear Reader and Typora feel different in four everyday jobs: opening a file, fixing a table, writing from scratch and telling the AI what to fix.

Opening a file Claude just created

One Clear Reader: copy the path from the chat, press ⌘L, paste, press Return. Or look at the top of Latest from your AI, where it's probably waiting.

Typora: open Finder, press ⇧⌘G, paste the path, find the file, then open it with Typora. Or use File › Open and click your way there. If Typora is your default for .md files, double-clicking works once you've found it.

Changing one row in a table

One Clear Reader (Free): open the Markdown source, change the value between the | pipes, press ⌘S. It shows the lines added and removed before anything is written. The table on the page updates after you save.

One Clear Reader (Pro): choose Edit like a document, click into the table and type in the cell. Tab moves between cells.

Typora: click into the table and type. For heavy table work this is still smoother in Typora, because that's what it's built for.

Writing a 5,000-word document from scratch

Typora is the more natural home. One Clear Reader's visual editor (Pro) handles headings, lists, checklists and tables, but the app is built for reading first.

Telling the AI what to fix

One Clear Reader: select, add a note, repeat. Then Copy as prompt and paste it into the chat.

Typora: copy each line into the chat and describe the change yourself.

Can you use One Clear Reader and Typora together?

Yes, you can use One Clear Reader and Typora together. They don't conflict, because both work on ordinary .md files on your disk.

A sensible split: make One Clear Reader your default app for .md files, so everything your AI creates opens as a readable page, and open Typora on purpose when you sit down to write something long. In Finder, right-click a file and use Open With to choose either one.
